Blog Page Intro

So what is a blog? According to the dictionary, a blog is a website on which individuals or groups of users produce an ongoing narrative. Blogging is the act of adding new material to or update on a regular basis a blog (short for weblog).

Many times community members, patrons, staff members, or students may have questions that they would like to have addressed. This blog is intended to provide an opportunity for anyone with questions or suggestions to submit them either anonymously or not. It is the intention of the district to be transparent, providing the information that community members, patrons, parents, and staff members want. However, board members and district employees cannot respond to questions, concerns, or suggestions if we don't know what they are.

Staff members understand that this format will not reach everyone as not everyone in the community has access to a computer. However, it is just one more opportunity for the community to direct communication to the district and for the staff members to provide information back. It is also believed that if one person in the community has a question, concern, or suggestion then it is quite possible and probable that other people will also.

It is hoped that you will find this opportunity useful.                                               What are your thoughts?

Facts? Fiction? Rumors?
In this blog, the superintendent (either as directed by the board of education or through questions from patrons, parents, staff members, or students) will provide information, answer questions, and respond to suggestions. Please use this blog to ask questions, make suggestions, or express concerns.

In order to protect individuals or prevent inappropriate content from appearing on the district website, the district reserves the right to not publish comments that use inappropriate language or defame individuals.

Replacing floor in old gym and resurfacing track?
Both fact and fiction - projects have been discussed NOT approved ... read on for more information!

I suppose that this question was asked because it has been discussed. However, it is not currently on a project list that has been approved for funding.

The old gym (as it is fondly referred to) has many "dead" spots where when a ball is bounced on it causes the ball to shoot off in who knows what direction. This is very problematic when playing basketball. In addition, the floor has been refinished multiple times since its installation (1956) and has reached a condition that will likely not withstand another sanding and refinishing. This gym is still used for high school and junior high school sports teams (reminder: the district has 2 boys' teams and 2 girls' teams) - practice and sometimes games. It is also used by community youth teams during the basketball season. At some point, if the gym is to continue to be used, repairs will need to be made. The gym is also used daily for physical education classes.

As far as resurfacing the track is concerned, this is also a project that has been discussed and is not currently approved for funding. Tracks such as ours require periodic maintenance. In the last four years, we have done very little maintenance to the track. It is time for it to be evaluated and needed repairs to be made. This is part of typical and necessary maintenance. If the district and its patrons wish to continue with a track and field program, we must do the necessary work to provide a safe place for competition. I have checked with superintendents across the state for recommendations for companies that do this work and a list of potential companies has been prepared.

Replacing Toilets - Fact or Fiction?
Some one mentioned today that someone told the person that the district was replacing all of the toilets in the district to save some water. The person wondered if this was true and if it was, why were we replacing all of the toilets in the district.

The fact is that the facilities project proposal recently approved by the board includes the replacement of 18 toilets in the district. The maintenance director has been asked to provide a count of all toilets currently in use. That information will be included in the blog as soon as it is available.

11/4/09
Well, Byron came through with the information regarding the number of toilets in the district.

High School - 22, Old Gym - 15, Grade School - 17. Urinals - High School - 8, Old Gym - 5, Grade School - 6.

If I have done the math correctly, we are scheduled to replace 1/3 of the district toilets.

This is also posted as a comment because I am still learning how this works.

The reason why replacing toilets was included in the project was that some toilets are not functioning properly (leaking, running) and all toilets that are proposed for replacement are not low flow.

From the proposal: 18 toilets will be replaced with new 1.6 gpf (gallons per flush) fixtures. Urinals that are not currently 1.0gpf will be retrofitted with 1.0gpf flush valves. Lavatories throughout the District will be retrofitted with 1.5gpm (gallons per minute) or 0.5gpm aerators. All of these implementations will reduce water, gas, sewer and maintenance costs.

Over half of the costs associated with replacing toilets and removing showers in the old gym (also in the proposal)  will be paid for in water savings. In addition to saving the money associated with the toilets, the district is doing its part to conserve natural resources.
