Kirk Ives, Oxford Police Chief came to Oxford Elementary School with one mission in mind last week, to teach students gun safety.
With the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program kindergarten through third grade at (OES), learned an important lesson last week, ‘if you see a gun, stop, don’t touch it, leave the area and tell an adult.’
The program started in 1988 features Eddie Eagle, the programs mascot teaching students to follow four important steps to take if they find a gun: Stop, Don’t touch, Leave the area, and Tell an adult. Nationally the program has reached over 21 million children in all 50 states.
Students at OES watched an animated video, received brochures and materials to take home and discuss with their parents and even participated in a coloring contest. Winners of the coloring contest were: Mikala, kindergarten, Jace, 1st grade, Hunter, 2nd grade, and Landon, 3rd grade.
I thought it was very successful,” said Ives. “I have had parents tell me their children are walking around the house singing songs from the program... as well as my own.”
