Great Players and Coaches in Oxford Basketball History
Note: The following bios were gathered by doing extensive research and talking to locals in the area.
1934-1935 Oxford Team
Highest placing state team in program history. Finished 2nd in Class B.
Cecil Shoger-Coach (1935-1937)
One of two coaches to guide the Wildcats to back to back state tournament appearances. The Wildcats lost in the first round both times.
M.W. Williams-Coach (1943-1945)
Put together an incredible two year run with the Wildcats going 44-5. His 1943-1944 team lost in the first round of state. His team set records for consecutive home games and consecutive road games won.
Cliff Barnhart-Coach (1945-1953)
Had a great 8 season run at the helm of the Wildcat Program. Is the programs all time leader in total wins with 119. Won two consecutive Sumwick League Championships and guided the Wildcats to back to back state appearances in 1950-1951 and 1951-1952. He is the last coach to take the Wildcats to the state tournament.
Willie Nicklin-Coach (1960-1963)
Although his overall as the Wildcats head coach is under .500, Willie Nicklin went on to a KSHSAA Hall of Fame career at Topeka High. His 1962-1963 team finished 15-5.
David Kehres-Coach (1983-1985)
He spent only two years guiding the Wildcat program, but he did lead Oxford to its first league title of any kind in over 33 years when his 1984-1985 team won the SCBL. It was the first league title since Cliff Barnhart guided the Wildcats to state in 1951-1952.
Shannon Farr-Coach (1996-1997)
He spent 3 seasons at Oxford and became head coach in 1996-1997. He guided the Wildcats to an SCBL title and the most wins (19) in the modern era.
Jason Catlin-Player (1984-1989)
One the best all around players in the programs history. He ended up second all time in scoring (1,246) and is in the top 10 all time in several categories. One of the most explosive scorers in the programs history, Catlin was a 3 time 1st Team All SCBL player.
Kevin Ruyle-Player (1993-1997)
A solid all around player, Ruyle could score and rebound with the best in the state. He played on one of the most successful Oxford teams in program history in 1996-1997, when the team went 19-3 and lost in the semi-finals of Sub-State. Ruyle ended up 4th all time in scoring and 2nd all time in career rebounding. Ruyle was a 2 time 1st Team All SCBL league selection. He was also Honorable Mention All-State by the Wichita Eagle during the 1995-1996 season.
Josh Wheeler-Player (1995-1999)
One of the best low post scorers in the programs history. Wheeler finished 3rd all time in career scoring. He set school records for points scored in a season, season scoring average, most points in a game, rebounds in a season and rebounds in a career. His 42 points vs. West Elk in 1998-1999 wasnt approached until this past year. Wheeler played one year of basketball at Southwestern before transferring to Oklahoma State where he played football on several bowl teams.
Mark Cornejo-Player (2001-2005)
The programs all time leading scorer (1,267), Mark was truly a great player. He was a four year starter for the Wildcats under Head Coach and former Wildcat player Rick Totten. Cornejo is the programs only 4 time first team All SCBL league player. He was also named Honorable Mention All State in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 by the Topeka Capital Journal. Cornejo continued his athletic career playing baseball at Seward County Community College.
Matt Lowry-Player (2001-2005)
Along with Mark Cornejo, formed one of the most dangerous combinations in program history. A great athlete, Lowry was a 3 time first team All SCBL league selection. Lowry finished 5th all time in career scoring and is in the top 10 in career assists and steals.
Conner Hampton-Player (2005-2007)
A transfer from Kapaun Mt. Carmel in Wichita, Hampton had a great two year career for the Wildcats. He finished 7th all time in career scoring. He holds the career scoring average record, Conner was a two time 1st Team All-SCBL league selection. He became the first player in Wildcat history to be named first team all state, when he was selected to the 1st Team All State Class 2A team by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association (KBCA) in 2006-2007. He was also name Honorable Mention All State the same year by the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capital Journal. Conner is continuing his basketball career at Highland Community College.
