OHS 4n6 captures Belle Plaine title

Two 1st Place Trophies in One Week

by Lisa Deal

March 12, 2008

The Oxford Forensics team took home two first-place finishes this past week.  The first came at Belle Plaine on Monday, March 3rd.  Several OHS students, most of them first- or second-year performers, traveled to the home of the Dragons to compete with 12 other schools for bragging rights of the tournament.  This seemed to be a breakout meet for several of these student with Phil G. getting his first medal, 6th place in Humorous Solo.  Phillip Z. also placed for the first time in prose with 2nd place, which qualifies him for the state tournament.  Ryan S. took home 1st place in Extemporaneous Speaking and 2nd place in Informative Speaking, which he will also be taking to state.  Denise S. and Macy W. placed 3rd in duet; this was the first meet these two ladies had been teamed together.  Jessica W. placed 5th in Informative, with Liza P. placing 4th in Prose and 5th in OO.  Kally S. and Sarah W. placed 5th in Duet.

4n6 team take Chaparral meet

On Saturday, March 8th, 22 forensics students went to Chaparral and took charge of the meet.  Phillip Z. and Zach B. qualified for state in IDA by taking 1st place.  This was the first time the two had been paired up.  Zach also placed 3rd in humorous solo.  Ryan S. again took first place in Informative, while the duo of Macy and Denise placed 4th in duet.  Liza  placed 4th in Prose, with Phil Z. taking 2nd and Halea B. taking 6th in the same event.  Halea also placed 2nd in serious solo.  Lynsey M. placed 4th in Informative speaking and 5th in Poetry.  Allison N. just missed qualifying for state with 3rd in Poetry, while Macy and Riley E. placed 6th in IDA.  Liza  also placed 5th in Original Oration.  However, the team scores were even more impressive.  The 3rd place plaque went to Garden Plain who had 177 team points, with the second place plaque going to Ashland with 179.  Both of these schools had the same amount of students to count for team trophy awards.  But Oxford won with a total of 275 total points, nearly 100 points more than the 2nd place team.

The OHS forensics team has come a long way this year, and their ultimate goal is to capture the 9th SCBL league speech title in a row.  This team is young and very talented; on April 4th at Dexter, they plan to work hard to defeat the other league teams and bring home the plaque.
